Mindful Materials Handling

  • Recycling
    • Cardboard, metal, paper and wood were recycled during project construction.
  • Reusing
    • Exterior doors, windows and hardware were donated to Building REsources for reuse.
  • Salvaging
    • Exterior redwood was salvaged for other projects.
    • Existing concrete driveway was broken up and reused as walkway and patio for residence.

Sustainable Materials Integration

  • Foundation concrete contained 30% fly ash content.
  • Framing lumber was a mixture of new FSC-certified and salvaged material from C&K Salvage.
  • Many posts were salvaged Douglas fir from wine cask supports.
  • All exterior window and door trim was salvaged redwood from red wine casks and windfall from Golden Gate Park.
  • Salvaged Oak flooring (from old barn) was used in the addition and stairway areas.
  • Upper roof deck and hand-rail was built from Redwood salvaged from an Alaskan water tank.
  • Lower deck was made from Redwood salvaged from Hamilton Air Force Base.

Carbon Footprint Reduction

  • New windows and doors installed with insulated glazing and low-e coatings.
